Stem Cell Researchers' Discovery Will Allow Gay Couples To Create Their Own Eggs

Remember this name: Professor Mitinori Saitou. If you are a gay couple who would like to have a baby that would have your eyes and your partners smile, you are going to want to thank him. Mitinori, an adjunct professor in Mammalian Germ Cell Biology, led a team of scientists at Kyoto University's Institute for the Integrated Cell-Material Sciences to successfully create a mouse egg – no female required. The team then fertilized the egg with sperm they also created from stem cells, and were able to produce a litter of healthy mice.

Why wouldn't they? Mice are so cute!
Sure they are, until they break the rules, come into my house and try to get away with a taco shell.

You should not feed them junk food. They need whole grains and nuts.  ;D

Actually, I was feeding him the good stuff so long as he stayed outside under my porch, but apparently, he took issue with the supplied diet, broke the truce and came inside and went for the mexican food. Believe me, it wasn't my doing. Anyhoo, he's long gone now and with me having a little dog these days, I doubt another mouse would make it very far into the house now.

Cool.... I was wondering if this was even possible w/ gay males... (since they've already done the same kinda thing except with two eggs.) Does this mean they can also use stem cells to make the things the egg and sperm cells come from? :icon_suspicious:

lol that's a huge slap in the face to kids in foster homes.
I'm pretty sure there's a reason for all the people out their that can't have kids of their own.

I am a huge supporter of adoption. I was adopted, and am very happy that I was. This does provide people who are otherwise healthy a chance to have a child of their own genes, which is a huge deal for a lot of people.  It would be horrible if this had a negative impact on adoption.

Well, it most like will have a negative impact on adoption. That sucks, but at least we know that stem cell research has enormous promise. Seriously, why isn't the US funding it like crazy?! Parkinson's and many other terrible diseases can be wiped out!

There going to be a negative effect on adoption, but considering that some states don't allow same-sex couples to adopt children, that point is sometimes moot.  I'm also inclined to say that whatever downtick that happens with the 4% of same-sex pairings really could be offset by mixed-sex pairings (96%ers) picking up the slack, especially since mixed-sex pairings are the ones generally responsible for the need for adoption in the first place.

This discovery enables same-pairs to enjoy a major option available to mixed-sex pairs, so I consider this to be good news.
