This is something that crossed my mind many times before, so I figured I would post about it. The scenario I am envisioning is this: what would happen if a transgender person was nominated for a major music/film/television/etc. award? Of course, the majority of those awards are gender neutral, but I'm more interested in the gender specific ones: Best Actress, Best Male Voice, Best Female Artist, etc.

I suppose much of it would depend on whether he or she was openly transgender. I can't help but bring to mind Lana Wachowski (of the Matrix movies) recently coming out and her status as a well-known director. I have no doubts some narrow-minded bigot would contest/boycott/complain; they couldn't stand the thought that the "man in the dress" just won a woman's award.  ::) (tongue-in-cheek there, of course)

Would their nomination (or maybe even win?) go the way of Renee Richards and her experience in the Women's US Open?

Would Pat Robertson explode if Chaz Bono someday won Best Supporting Male Actor?  Or if Kim Petras won Best Female Artist?

Random factoid: Wendy Carlos, a transgender woman, won 3 (gender neutral) Grammy awards in 1969 under the Classical music category. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wendy_Carlos Go, Team T! :)

I'm seriosuly hoping that cloud Atlas and Lana get nominated for some awards.  Then we'll all find out I guess.

Oh, I hadn't realised she was already transitioning by the time she put together Switched On Bach - it was my first ever album, and it had her old name on the cover, back then.
