When we were growing up, we were always too poor to consider buying or renting a costume. We always made ours. It was the sewing, gluing, cutting, stapling, scavenging, improvising that I loved. When my step-grandchildren decided store-bought was there firm preference, I lost my reason to care about it. I am lucky though, several of my nieces carry on the crafting and cosplay tradition (year round).
Our halloween ritual now is to buy a bowl o good chocolates, turn off the porch light, and stay in.
I always wondered about the proximity of Samhein/Halloween and Election Day in this country. One is a sacred day that has been increasingly commercialized and profaned in the pursuit of profit and power for the very rich, and the other is... likewise.
This is the first year I'm voting as Madeline, and can't wait to receive my ballot.
