Repeal of LGBT protections to be on Nov. 6 ballot

An ordinance that protects gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people from discrimination in Salina will go on the ballot in November.
Salina city commissioners voted 2-3 Monday against a motion to repeal the protections. Commissioners Aaron Householter, Barb Shirley and Kaye Crawford voted against the motion, and Commissioner Samantha Angell and Mayor Norm Jennings voted in favor.
After that motion failed, commissioners voted unanimously to place the issue on the Nov. 6 general election ballot.
The votes came in response to a 302-page petition submitted to the city clerk's office by Awaken Salina and the Wichita-based Kansas Family Policy Council that called for the repeal of the protections.

Kansas Rep. Tim Huelskamp and others urged roughly 200 people to ramp up their efforts and vote down Salina's equality ordinance.
In a Monday night "Awaken Salina" rally to repeal the city's ordinance giving protection from discrimination to people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered, speakers said it was time to take a stand or watch religious liberties erode.

"The threat to justice here is a threat to justice everywhere," a hoarse Huelskamp said to the audience in a meeting room on the second floor of the Salina Bicentennial Center.

People holding signs, two with American flags, lined the road just west of the Salina Bicentennial Center Monday night to demonstrate against a rally planned inside.

Rep. Tim Huelskamp, R-Kan. was the featured speaker at the Bicentennial Center rally, planned to gain support for repeal of the Salina ordinance giving protection from discrimination to lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgendered people. About 200 attended the rally.

About 40 held signs outside asking people to "Honk if you agree" that voting "No" Nov. 6 on the special question to repeal the LGBT ordinance was the right choice.

Kansas is all kinds of messed up, there's even a book written about it, What's the Matter With Kansas?  Highly recommended for trying to understand why so many people in the US seem to have gone off the deep end over there on the right side of the pool.

FIGHT APATHY!, or don't...

Thank You Tekla, looks interesting especially the part about former Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius, now Secretary of Health and Human Services.
