Senator Raynell Andreychuk told reporters "for Canada to claim that it fully respects the rights and freedoms of its children and to remain a leader in the human rights field in the international sphere, it must immediately improve its compliance."

Some of the issues covered in the report include: the situation of Aboriginal children without access to adequate healthcare, education and housing; the circumstances of children in state care and in detention centres; the bullying of children who are gay, lesbian or transsexual; the rights of adopted children to have access to information about their biological family; policing and preventing the sexual exploitation of children; and corporal punishment and spanking.
