This is a classic "romance" novel with Gothic overtones much better written than most current  ones.Since it was published in 1938 it has been continually in print. It is easy for most of us to identify with the nameless heroine and narrator,a young girl suddenly thrust into a life she was not raised to live, and orphan who becomes the mistress of a great estate in England.
