Hello,

My girlfriend is MtF trans, and her state of residency is Arizona. Soon, she's going to be going to get her driver's license photo updated for the first time since she began her transition (Thanks, everyone who helped on that - between me and another friend of hers, we convinced her it was the best course of action), and now she's saying she's heard of some way to have gender completely stricken from her AZ DL. She can't find anything by looking for it, and I've as of yet been unsuccessful in locating any information. I plan on calling whatever appropriate office handles these matters in Arizona sometime in the next few days to try to seek clarification, but first I thought I'd give here a shot.

That said, can anyone elucidate me on the issues involved with changing name or gender (Or striking gender from the license entirely) on a state driver's license? Obviously with an eye towards Arizona, if anyone has any experience with that.

I fear, however, that whatever she might have heard was incorrect, and that changing gender on a DL likely requires the gender on a birth certificate to be legally changed. Having viewed a few state-by-state checklists of what all is required to have a birth certificate changed, as well as several conflicting citations of state law from LGBT support websites, and even law libraries...It does not appear to be a simple or concise process, by any stretch of the imagination. I'm hoping that changing a name is not similarly complicated.

As always, thanks for your time, you guys and gals have been an excellent help to us both, thus far!

From what I've read, it looks like Arizona requires a physician's letter (similar to Oregon's requirement of a letter from a therapist). It requires a physician attesting to one's 'irrevocable commitment to the sex change procedure'.
