I've decided that I'm going to at least try to educate my parents about what it means to be transgender and the community and how I feel. In the past when I tried to talk to my parents about me being trans it didn't go well. If anybody knows of some books about transguys that are good to read, any forums for Christian parents who have a transgender child, or documentaries that would be great.
This isn't a book about transguys or for parents of trans people, but if your parents seem to have trouble respecting you enough to allow you to talk about your feelings without screaming Stephen R. Covey's
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families might be good for them to read. Habit 5 might be especially helpful "Seek First to Understand... Then to be Understood." (I swear, it's actually a really good book... now if only my family would read something more substantial than the
Bargain Buyer I'd be all set).
I saw a great documentary on trans people that was on youtube, but I can't find it or remember the name of it... If I remember the name, I'll post it. I think it'd be good for you, because one of the guys in the documentary had a mother who wasn't supportive at all due to her religious convictions but then changed her mind when they thought he might have cancer. Now she's supportive of him; it's one of those nice happy ending stories. (Has anyone else here seen it?)
