I know that feel, though it also applies to other RPGs and other players.
It's hard not to knee-jerk react, but I try to remind myself that it can be a disconnect for some folks. I've only known one person that was actively critical of 'cross-dressing' in RPGs, but I got round that by deliberately playing gay men to annoy him. However, that did lead to a misunderstanding with a totally different player, who tried to offer my Exalted character up to a female NPC, only to have to be told that, not only was my character gay, but was also married, and his husband was right there at the time!
A fellow player in my Apocalypse World game accidentally uses female pronouns for my character occasionally, but he's fairly new and a good guy, so I cut him a lot of slack, just gently reminding him each time. I think I made it harder for myself in that game, because I deliberately picked a male spelling of a usually female name, as the character is heavily based on Jayne from Firefly.
