... and he's super grumpy! Because he never sleeps! I swear, one of these days I'm gonna dose his energy drink with some nyquil or something. He works nights, and I work days, so he should nap or something before I get home, or when I get home, or when the baby naps, or when his friends pester him incessantly that they'll watch the kid so he can sleep, but nooooooo, he's got video games to play and people to socialize with. Look, I get it, he's a social creature, and social creatures like sun to play in, but for the love of Pete, he hasn't slept more than 3 hours at a time in days because he wants to play instead of take care of himself. And then he gets super grumpy and fussy because he's tiiired. I could understand every few days pulling an all-nighter, but almost every single day?! Aaaargh!!!
</rant>

So how do I convince him to flippin' sleep, or nap, or pass-out-on-the-floor-in-a-drug-induced-stupor.... ehrm, I mean, snooze on the floor... in a drug induced stupor. He has the time to do it, and multiple opportunities, he just doesn't want to because he wants to play with his buddies. And then on the rare days I have to work a 12 hour shift he complains that he has no time to sleep! It's driving me batty. Advice?
What the hell was that?!                 From every wound there is a scar,
Spaceball 1.                                     and every scar tells a story.
*gasp* They've gone to plaid!        A story that says,
                                                        "I survived."

Ehhhhhh    Rock him to sleep with real rocks?

Talk to him and if that does not work, talk to his buddies.  Then talk to your doctor.

It does not take courage or bravery to change your gender.  It takes fear of living one more day in the wrong one.~me

My question to you would be:  How many hours do you expect him to sleep per day?

People are different, and some people are absolutely capable of thriving on such a schedule.  My spouse goes to bed and wakes up at the same time everyday, (10pm-6am)  and is an absolute grouch if she deviates from that schedule.  In contrast, I average 3.5 to 4 hrs per night, and am likewise grouchy if I sleep any more than that.  Weird, huh?   :-\

It sounds to me as though the issue here is your husband's attitude; he's being a grump and no one wants to live with that.  Your husband really should consider what are the components that make up a happy marriage.  Being grumpy and grouchy are not going to cut it.

Like Angie, I sleep between 3 and 4 hours a night, every night.  I've been on this schedule for many years, and I feel fine.  And I'm far from grumpy.  In fact, I actively make the effort everyday to deliberately treat my spouse with appreciation, gratitude, affection and loving kindness.  I compliment her often, pay attention to her, delight in her company, and care for her in the ways make her feel most loved and supported.

Seriously, it sounds to me as though your husband is being grumpy and grouchy and using his sleep patterns (or being tired) as his excuse for unloving behavior.  You would probably not be posting this message here if your husband was sleeping 3 hours a night, AND being a loving, doting, affectionate, supportive husband.  Perhaps there is a way that your husband could keep his preferred schedule, while at the same time taking care of the emotional needs of his family.  Meditation might help.  Some form of stress management might do it.

Anyway, that's my take on what you've written here.  I hope it helps.

Peace,
Miharu

Lead him by his genitals.

If that means "have sex with him," then that might work. Men always get sleepy after coitus.

In my experience, men get anything you want if they think there's a possibility of sex.
