Swedish Court repeals Sterilization Requirement
http://www.tgeu.org/Swedish_Court_Repeals_Sterilization_RequirementThe Administrative Court of Appeals in Stockholm, Sweden announced today, December 19th 2012 that the requirement in the Swedish Law on Legal Gender Recognition that a person wishing to change gender marker must undergo sterilization indeed violates the Swedish Constitution (Regeringsformen 2 kap 6 ยง) as well as the articles 8 and 14 of the European Convention of Human Rights.
According to the Administrative Court of Appeals, this requirement must thus be removed and no longer be practiced when someone applies for a change of gender marker. This is also proposed by the Swedish Government in a revision of the law of 1972 on Legal Gender Recognition, effective July 1st 2013.
