I have always hated my voice even before my gender issues. I always got called mam on the phone even when I sat there and told them my male gendered name. At which point they would doubt my identity and refuse to help me or release the information I needed (like bank info).
Anyway, after i decided to be female, it was rather nice to not have to deal with that anymore--I had to legally change my name ofcourse. The only problem is I still feel my voice is manly and not female at all. On top of that, I feel I have a heavy speech impediment. though friends say I sound fine and like any other woman. I just feel like my voice sucks.

very few transsexuals will have the voice that they want (or need in order to to pass) without working on it....

I think this is almost same as what we see on the mirror. Many of us still see more faults than the good no matter how passable we are. I am like you I am always getting mam  on the phone and my fiends always say my voice is quiet sexy lol. But I never see what they say and still think my voice sucks. May be it's because I hated everything about me before transitioning and that made me to hate the even good thing about me too.

Best thing is if others say you sound like a girl and you will always getting mam on the phone, then try to believe your sound is not that bad after all. That's how I am dealing with it now.  ;)

fun fact, almost everyone hates their recorded voice. even most singers. don't feel bad about it, but if it really bothers you there are avenues for "correcting" your voice. I myself have an extremely low voice (and my only higher pitches are just cartoony. I actually lack a lot of notes in my voice so just air will come out.) and am saving up money for a FEMLAR procedure.

What's a FEMLAR procedure tomthom? I'm pretty worried about my voice. I can sound like a woman if I try but not naturally at all. I'm going to get a spectrum analyzer to see where I fall as far as pitch is concerned but I have had trouble finding anything on how to make your voice more feminine. It seems odd as even if I am passable and pretty if I sound like a man people will think I am a man. I don't think I sound cartoony if I try to speak in a higher register but I don't know. I do hate hearing a voice recording of me but that is fairly common. I was a magazine editor too so I had to record myself all the time during interviews. How does one go about raising their voice's pitch? I do know that is one of the most important parts of voice but my knowledge ends there.

FEMLAR is a procedure where the larynx is tightened and shrunk back down to a pre puberty size(most females barely change their voice from at all through puberty. It's mostly just a learning process of intonation and varying the pitch you were born with. girls with lower voices generally have damage to their voices(like emma stone). that's the layman's way of describing it really. It involves lasers and incisions and slight restructuring and retuning/alignment of the chords. and was only recently pioneered.

this video has an example of a girl that underwent it and a few minute in it shows her pre hormones and transition. so you can get an idea of how dramatic it can be.
