So I applied for Roller Derby in my area by email. I'm hoping to be able to get on the team despite not taking any hormones. We'll see how it goes with local regulations, and whether or not the team is comfortable with that.

I wonder if anybody's thought about starting an all-trans Roller Derby?  ???

Hi Steffo!

I referee for a derby team in my town. Do you know if your team is part of WFTDA, a national roller derby league? They have rules about TG skaters, that you must have hormone levels in the biological female range and be living full time as a woman. No surgery required though, which is nice.

Even if you can't skate with them now, don't be shy about getting involved as a ref or NSO. That way, if/when you begin hormones, you'll have a leg up. Plus, it's soooo much fun!

Cheers!

I have no idea what Roller Derby is or how it's played. I know it involves roller skates, which I have a really hard time with anyway. But a dear friend of mine joined a team a couple of weeks back and she loves it.

I don't either I'm afraid. The only time I've heard of it was a trailer for a Raquel Welsh film.

I also doubt it will make it to England in the near future, as so many other American customs have, since it would need the investment a roller skating place, (think you people call it a rink).

But I too wish you well and hope it works out.

I don't know it is possible, but could you simply start a team for all comers, rule 1, no discrimination, rule to, you can actually play roller derbying? (Again, sorry for the terminology).

Roller Derby takes me back to the late 1960's and early 1070's when there was a pro league that was on TV.  It usually came on after the pro wrestling matches on Saturday mornings/ afternoons in most places.  The "Blonde Bomber" Joan Weston of the San Fransisco Bay Bombers was one of the main highliners.  Now on the latest Hawaii Five-0 there is an episode revolving around the death of the local roller derby star.  Bounty hunter Duane "Dog" Chapman has a small role with a fugitive chase in the beginning of this episode as well.  Google "Hawaii Five-0" for this episode in the US.
Good luck in getting on the team!
