I was listening to my Halestorm CD on the way home today and the song "Beautiful With You" came on. It took me several listens through but I think what it is saying is that regardless of what everyone else thinks, you are still beautiful to yourself (i.e. the one you see in the mirror). It helped me feel beautiful and hope its a morale boost for others. Here are the lyrics for others interpretation:

"Beautiful With You"

I stare at the girl in the mirror
T-shirt, torn up jeans, no beauty queen
But the way that you see me
You get underneath me
And all my defenses just fall away
Fall away

I am beautiful with you
Even in the darkest part of me
I am beautiful with you
Make it feel the way it's supposed to be
You're here with me
Just show me this and I'll believe
I am beautiful with you

I stand naked before you now
No walls to hide behind
So here I am you see all of my scars
Still here you are
I bare my soul and I'm not afraid
Not afraid

I am beautiful with you
Even in the darkest part of me
I am beautiful with you
Make it feel the way it's supposed to be
You're here with me
Just show me this and I'll believe
I am beautiful with you

I've been the strong one for so long
But I was wrong
Does it make you weak if you're needing someone?
I'm not holding back and I know what I want

I am beautiful with you
I am beautiful with you
You want me for myself
You get me like no one else
I am beautiful with you

I am beautiful with you
Even in the darkest part of me
I am beautiful with you
Make it feel the way it's supposed to be
You're here with me
Just show me this and I'll believe
I am beautiful with you

As a english/poetry nerd and a music geek I wanted to say this...(deep breath)

The song could be talking about seeing beauty in yourself, or it could be about finding another person that fully completes and understands you and loves you for who you are. The true beauty in poetry is in the way that it is universal and can be interpreted by many people in many ways. There is almost no right or wrong way to interpret poetry, unless you aren't looking at the whole song.

For example I will post a couple of songs that are very ambiguous...

The Night by Disturbed

What has come over me
What madness taken hold of my heart
To run away, the only answer
Pulling me away
To fall upon the night
The source of my recovery
Sweet shadow taking hold of the light
Another day has been devoured
Calling me away, begging the question
Why

For saving me from all they've taken
Letting my armor fall again
Giving me the strength to face them
Feeling it taking over now
On a path to take it all away
There can be no better way of knowing

[Chorus]
In a world beyond controlling
Are you going to deny the savior
In front of your eyes
Stare into the night
Power beyond containing
Are you going to remain a slave for
The rest of your life
Give into the night

This self discovery
Redemption taking hold of my mind
A serenade of haunting voices
Calling me away
To feast upon the night
The source of my Felicity
Dark maiden taking hold of my hand
Lead me away from hibernation
Strong and unafraid
Never a question why

For saving me from all they've taken
Letting my armor fall again
Giving me the strength to face them
Feeling it taking over now
I'm about to take it away
There can be no better way of knowing

[Chorus]
In a world beyond controlling
Are you going to deny the savior
In front of your eyes
Stare into the night
Power beyond containing
Are you going to remain a slave for
The rest of your life
Give into the night

[Guitar Solo]

Give in to the night

[Chorus]
In a world beyond controlling
Are you going to deny the savior
In front of your eyes
Stare into the night
Power beyond containing
Are you going to remain a slave for
The rest of your life
Give into the night

Night [x3]
Give into the Night
Night [x3]
Give into the Night [x2]

The question remains...what is "The Night". My answer would be that "The Night" is a metaphor for something dark, occult/mystic, and extremely powerful. Depending on my own life circumstances I might say that "The Night" is my "deviant" sexuality, or perhaps it is my true internal sense of gender trying to push through.

What Lies Beneath by Breaking Benjamin

Take a breath
Hold it in
Start a fight
You won't win
Had enough
Let's begin
Nevermind
I don't care

All in all
You're no good
You don't cry
Like you should
Let it go
If you could
When love dies in the end

So I'll find what lies beneath
Your sick twisted smile
As I lie underneath
Your cold jaded eyes
Now you turn the tide on me
'Cause you're so unkind
I will always be here
For the rest of my life

Here we go
Does it hurt
Say goodbye
to this world
I will not
Be undone
Come to life
It gets worse

All in all
You're no good
You don't cry
Like you should
I'll be gone
when you fall
Your sad life
Says it all

So I'll find what lies beneath
Your sick twisted smile
As I lie underneath
Your cold jaded eyes
Now you turn the tide on me
'Cause you're so unkind
I will always be here
For the rest of my life

Don't carry me under
You're the devil in disguise
God sing for the hopeless
I'm the one you left behind

So I'll find what lies beneath
Your sick twisted smile
As I lie underneath
Your cold jaded eyes
Now you turn the tide on me
'Cause you're so unkind
I will always be here
For the rest of my life

I used to interpret this song as "the fight" between me and my darker side. In fact, almost the whole album of "Dear Agony" can be interpreted this way.

All in all, music is highly therapeutic because it can be interpreted many ways... :D
