Diary of Marker and Name Change *WIP*

I have officially am moving to this part of the forums, my coming out is pretty much complete.   Now its about presenting as Rita 100% of the time which is easy as I found it harder to pretend to be a guy.  Scary but easier.

Regardless I wanted to share my experiences from beginning to end of changing my identifying documents -organizes my folder full of documentation-

One of the first things I did was tell my doctor, and he agreed to write me a letter.  These will primarily come in handy later in the process when I go through the motion of changing my gender markers with the DMV, and Social security administration.

I am also in contact with a case manager as well who is aiding me through this process and will help me verify I have met all of my requirements before I submit anything.

After what needs me done is complete I will be applying for a passport as a woman and I will be able to document any problems or hassles if I encounter then as well.

My experiences will be different from others in different states when it comes to State ID, and Name Change.  Social Security, and Passport will be relatively stable as its a federal function.




Name change in NY - First stop on a long journey

Step 1: Ordering a copy of my birth certificate to initiate a name change.
Step 2: Completing, and proof reading my petition to change my name
Step 3: Submitting my petition with required documents with the courts *waiting on certified birth certificate*
Step 4: Received Birth Certificate on 3/15/2013

I hope it all goes smoothly for you.  Here in the UK changing your name is easy (it just needs a Deed Pole) but having your gender changed is an entirely different matter as you need to prove 2 years of RLE  before you can get a Gender Recognition Certificate.

Rosie, in Washington (state) it's pretty darn easy to change gender on the drivers license, not so sure about the other stuff as there's no online source as readily available, but here http://www.dol.wa.gov/driverslicense/genderchange.html  its simple. and the pdf...the qualified person just has to check a few boxes (of course the doctor must agree). It's almost too simple, in terms of everything else.

I'm also accruing documents to prepare for my name change in NYC. I have an appropriately medicalizing letter from my psychologist, and am awaiting the arrival of my birth certificate. Miserably, I have to acquire new IDs from the SSA and DMV using my former name before submitting my petition, and then, of course, do it all over again. I'll be watching this thread, and will share anything I learn over the coming weeks.
