Try just sitting with your knees together and your legs crossed at the ankle. Crossing your legs at the knee causes varicose veins and deep vein thrombosis...both can be very painful. And dear abbie says crossing at the ankle is more 'ladylike' anyway :)

Good tip from a great gal who would know! Which reminds me of the pre-op TG woman in the 14" skirt that rather horrified me as she crossed her legs above the knee. It wasn't thrilling seeing the front of her panties briefly exposed  :icon_yikes:
She was one up on Sharon Stone with that stunt!

I've always just crossed my ankles too:)....although I am very impressed with your 'origami' crossing legs photo! Lol

3 months ago I had to pull one leg over the other in order to cross above the knee.

Now after some months of HRT, tucking, and stretching I've almost forgotten that I once could not do it.

I probably sit knees together & ankles crossed more than half of the time, though. I do find it to feel more "ladylike" :D

Legs crossed at ankles, would "Dear Abby" approve :)

And oh how good the sun feels today!

Oh my I'm envious of you getting to be in that sun! When I was little the nuns at my school taught us to sit this way......(I guess that tells you they didn't want us to have fun!) But they told us to think of the queen of england. Anytime she crosses her ankles(not her legs...oh gasp!) But you do it like knees together, back straight and ankles crossed to the side of you and like you're pulling them back toward your bottom.  This way I'm sure is no where near as relaxing as your pic! Better to be relaxed and comfy, and you look like you are:)

Hmm, out of curiosity, since I'm not really comfortable actually sitting (partly because my legs if left relaxed always want to be knees apart and that's uncomfortable), I almost always kneel on my chair (alternating with periods of sitting Indian-style and/or straight).

Roughly this.

I've always wondered whether this is good, bad or has no effect on my body.

A,

Wow, that pose in the pic you put up.....amazing posture! I sit like that all the time if I'm sitting on the floor.....the only problem I personally have sitting like that for long periods is blood flow in my legs(my feet always fall asleep!) Do you have the same problem? Maybe it's my feet placement as I'm sitting on them....who knows! I never sit indian style so I can't answer for that one:)

Sitting like that would definitely give me pins and needles in my legs and feet. Not good for my dvt paranoia either.

AllieM:

As somebody has said, it differs from person to person, and I don't think it effects blood pressure.
Iv been crossing my legs for years and years exactly the same as in that photo that A posted, I do it without thinking, thigh over thigh, but I don't think Id be able to do it if I still had my junk, thats just my experience.

Uuhm, yes. After several minutes, I often start to have this problem. Sometimes, just switching my feet (the one underneath goes on top and vice versa) or slightly moving one leg aside for a few minutes fixes it. If not, that's when I alternate, so my legs stay alive. I sit straight or indian-style for a while, and when I get annoyed or conscious that my posture is not healthy (sitting on one leg for example), I go back. I move around a lot, I guess.

Though to avoid this, supposedly there's something about carefully aligning feet with the "sitting bones". The Japanese always sit like this, and they have the same problems, but most probably other tips, too. It's called seiza, or 正座.

My skinny origami legs as I sit here having my coffee  :)

I was about to say - I often sit the same exact way - lol.

I'm a little bean-pole, and have never had difficulty crossing my legs (though when I was younger, and would catch myself doing it, I would quickly uncross them so as not to appear effeminate - lol... I quit bothering after determining that I was old enough to sit however the heck I wanted).
I ain't scared... I just don't want to mess up my hair.

this is my fave lazy relaxing slouch when sitting on the porch watching the critters in the yard, years of hearing my mother tell my sister to "sit like a lady" effected both her and I I guess,  lol

Karate? I've done some when I was about 10-12 years old. Not much. I reached, like, orange belt, and in the only two duel thingies we did, all I did was dodge, because both hitting and blocking seemed painful. Super warrior, rwar.

Though if it's related to seiza, nope. We sat indian-style. I just sit this way because it's comfy and allows me to warm my legs while sitting, too.

For me, since I have been quite feminine all my life and some of my studies have confirmed that I have a female bone structure, is most likely the reason that I never had a problem sitting with my legs crossed or double crossed. And that I have been doing it since I was little, even to the point of being ridiculed by some extremely closed-minded people. For me it is the most natural  and comfortable position.

I'm not quite sure. My brother has a very masculine bone structure and has been crossing his legs, like Obama does, since very young. I don't think it's any one thing. It's a combination of gender biased nurture and how you're physically built, but sex may be the least of it.

Yeah, uhm, the correct seiza is this. Feet crossed, buttocks on feet. Actually, sitting with your feet outwards (basically sitting on the ground between your legs) has pretty much nothing to do with seiza. I... can do it, but it seriously strains my overly tight ligaments. Comfort: zero. Probably a posture reserved to flexible people.

As for karate... Hmm, I never got to the point of getting hit. I was too much of a scaredy-cat. I just kept jumping back and sideways until the teacher got tired of it and stopped the match.

For what it's worth I noticed that when tightly tucked I can't cross my legs properly but untucked and/or poorly tucked I can cross effortlessly and even double cross my legs lol...
