"In January, the Russian parliament voted unanimously in favour of a bill that makes it illegal for the country's gay community to hold public events or distribute information to minors." Lawmakers want to stop what they called the "propaganda of homosexuality", a phrase that has no legal definition and which could be interpreted broadly. There has been another law passed recently that bans pride parades for 100 years.

The recent homophobic laws seems to be correlating to a rise in homophobia in every day life. Al Jazeera speaks with a lesbian, Marina Georgeiva, who says that was recently physically attacked, spent three weeks in the hospital, and police have done nothing with her case. LGBT activists say that these laws are re-criminalizing homosexuality (homosexuality was decriminalized 20 years ago in Russia).
