WEST BARNSTABLE — A local advocacy group will hold an all-day seminar in April introducing Cape Codders to the lives, backgrounds and challenges of transgender people.

The Cape Cod Chapter of PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transgenders) will host "The Who, What, Why and How of Being Transgender" from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. April 6 at Cape Cod Community College.

A registration fee of $20 is due by Friday.

The conference will discuss "transgender basics, myths and facts, as well as the unique hardships of gender nonconforming children, youth and young adults," according to a PFLAG statement.

Speakers will include a social worker who oversees an LGBT mentoring program, a clinical psychologist and several transgender people and families of transgenders.

PFLAG has seen an increased number of transgender people and their families at recent monthly support meetings, according to the statement.

History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again.
