When Erica Kay-Webster was growing up in the 1950s, the daughter of fundamentalist Christians was accustomed to prayer but had one in particular that was deeply personal. As a female child born into a male body, Kay-Webster's prayer was simple, but profound.

"My own secret prayer was for God to please fix my body," she said. "To let me wake up in a girl's body."

Kay-Webster, like countless others, is transgender, someone whose gender identity does not match the gender they were assigned at birth. Transgender people are those that make up the "T" in the acronym "LGBT" that stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender.

As Kay-Webster fully understands, growing up transgender can be a painful, often harrowing experience. It is with that in mind that PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) of Cape Cod is holding a special conference April 6 called "The Who, What, Why and How of Being Transgender."
