The Rev. Erin Swenson, a Presbyterian minister, is the first known mainstream Protestant minister to transition from male to female while remaining in ordained office, according to conference organizers. (See related column Page A9).

Transgender Americans are raising new questions about what makes someone identify as male, female, neither or both. Last week, Newsweek magazine devoted its cover story to the issue.

According to the Center for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Life at Duke University, the word transgender continues to evolve.
