steps I am taking

Well, I have told some of my family. I had been saying I would tell them for a long time driving my fiance nuts...but I finally told them. They asked me questions but the main thing they said was as long as I was happy. I guess I should tell you where I am at. I have been seeing a therapist and have been very happy with her. I have never opened up to a therapist like I have with her. I have no started t yet.....I hope to by August. I want to change my name before June 16 my b day before I renew my license. I also told my shift supervisor last night. I talked with her for almost an hour. I work in a womans prison...and being a ftm....i have to do strip searches.....and because I have come to terms and realized my true self...I dont feel I should because male staff dont do strip searches. Anyway....she was really supportive and told me to go to human resources and talk to them about the name change...and just let them know what is going on. I am going down to the town hall today I think to find out about a name change...I know I need to get a letter from my therapist for it....but I am seeing her tomorrow. What my question is....I want tomake sure that I am going through the right steps with work and everything else. Thanks for anyone who can give me some advice.

Sounds like you're doing the right thing to me. You shouldn't need a therapist letter to change your name. I don't know for sure, but that'd be a fairly unusual requirement.

Thanks Dennis. I decided that I would talk to human resources next Tuesday...they are at the facility every Tuesday and Thursday. I want to consult a lawyer so I am not going in totally blind. I know that state cant fire me because of this but its always nice to have consultation. Plus my fiance and I want to talk to one anyway about our marriage and wills and such. It will be nice to have someone who knows about the state and its laws and has dealt with trans issues before. I will keep you updated. I did not think you needed a letter but that is why I have to call and find out. Anyway..like I said I will keep you posted.

Sounds like you're really moving along and getting things done. I don't think you can get a name change that fast, unfortunately. BUT... in my state you can delay getting your new license up to a month from your birthday, so maybe look into that.
