NORTHAMPTON – Writer and transgender rights activist Julia Serano told a Smith College audience Thursday night that transwomen often face "transmisogyny."

"A lot of times the transphobia we face is full of misogyny," Serano said. A transwoman, she made her remarks during a presentation titled "On Gender Entitlement and Perception" in Wright Hall. The event was sponsored by Transcending Gender, an advocacy group for transgender students at Smith, and attended by about 50 people.

I read the article and felt nothing.

But then I read the comments and just about threw up.

I wouldn't worry about the comments most of them are from bitter hate-filled people. They are an extreme minority. Open-minded kind people generally don't comment.

Well, the comments on that article were..... uh, disheartening?

I have learned the hard way, never read the comments on any news article.  You are almost guaranteed to read something hateful or bigoted.  Even if the story is about how cute kittens are, you will inevitably see a comment about the jews controlling us all or the gays are going to bring the apocalypse.  The internet is a useful tool, but sometimes it makes me very sad for humanity.

I read both the article and the comments and didn't see anything much surprising.

Often something said in the comments on such articles makes an additional statement which isn't expressed in words. Statements made out of fear or insecurity are the ones based on the least amount of knowledge.

Besides just because the Internet exists doesn't mean that everyone has figured out how to use it.
