gender marker on ID cards - discrepancy

Ok this question is a little specific:

I'm looking at getting the gender marker changed on most of my forms of ID (drivers license, passport, etc). Mostly I care about my drivers license and passport so I can avoid future hassle and embarrassment with travel/purchases/traffic stops...those sorts of things.

I also have a dependent military ID because my husband is active duty military. I'm worried that changing the gender marker on it (which changes the gender in the whole military record system) will cause big problems with the benefits I get as a spouse (such as health care and access to base housing) since the federal gov. doesn't recognize same-sex unions.

My question is, would there be anything wrong with changing gender markers on all IDs except for the military one? Is there any sort of legal requirement anyone can think of to have your gender match on ALL documentation?

I don't really expect anyone to know this, but any help appreciated. Extensive web searching has not helped me with this particular issue. I'm in the US, btw.

i really have no clue Ford, but I'd wait to see if the Supreme Court repeals DOMA to change your military dependent card to male, the decision will come out in June.

I'll do some research to find out if it's required for you now if I can find time this weeksince I have access to legal databases.

That would be brilliant, thanks!

The only example I can think of that suggests I might be ok is the fact that quite often, transitioned folks go along happily with their IDs changed but without ever having changed their birth certificates.

While I don't have the exact answer, I found this fascinating article which seems to discuss a lot of concerns people on this board have had. I downloaded it and put it in my dropbox so you guys don't have to pay to read it:

Estate Planning and the Transgendered Client, 30 W. New Eng. L. Rev. 675, 686-87 (2008). Author: A. Spencer Bergstedt.

"For many transgender people, the primary identification they use on a daily basis is their driver's licenses or state-issued identifications. Thus, there is little need for a gender marker change in the SSA computer database.58 However, the fact that most of the states will issue new driver's licenses with a corrected gender marker without the requirement of surgical procedures has led to a conundrum in the matching of databases. A transgender person's state-issued identification may have that individual's correct name and gender but the SSA may have a different gender marker because *687 of the surgical requirement. This results in "no-match"59 letters being sent to employers or to the state-licensing office, which, in turn, can then prevent the transperson from obtaining accurate identification or can create difficulty with an employer.60"

It also discusses marital status and DOMA.

Social security no longer sends out no match letters for gender.

Don't change your military id. You could cost your partner their career. It has happened before,
