I have a meeting next week with one of the organisers of IDAHO http://www.dayagainsthomophobia.org/-IDAHO-english,41- one of my support workers has suggested setting up a stall to explain trans topics.
It's short notice as the International Day Against Homophobia & Transphobia is in 2 weeks so I don't have much time to get this together!!
Before you ask me how they got IDAHO from those words then I don't know but will be asking, it should spell IDAHT  ???

Does anyone have any suggestions about what they would like to see on such a stall? Articles on Transphobia? Scientifict facts to educate people? Guides for gender reassignment in the UK?

Feel free to throw anything you like at me, i'll consider any suggestions.

I'll also be discussing setting up a support group for my home town, thanks to a suggestion by FTM Diaries i'll be trying to follow the all inclusive template set by Susan's place (MTF, FTM, CD, Andro etc).

Thank you all

Jayne

First I have to say..... THAT DOGGY IS SO CUTE!!

Okay, now that's out of the way.  Personally, I think you should focus mainly on educating people on what being transgender is.  People tend to get confused about us and create a bunch of assumptions in their head as a result.  And you know what they say, ignorance can lead to hate.  Once others see that we are normal people just living our lives, they tend to be more accepting.  IF people continue to have bigoted and incorrect views about us, they are less likely to care about transphobia.  So, I think establishing our humanity is the most important thing.  Then go into transphobia and the issues we face.  At least, that's how I'd do it.

you could have a movie event, or a cafe who would some kind of trans-night. talking trans topic and so on.

try to make something people feel cozy about so even people who might not be so well educated about trans people still feel they want to check it out.

thats what I think.

I also belive education and awareness is very importent, so the question is just how you do that the best way for the time you have.

wish you luck.

My suggestion would be to explain that the basic issue are beliefs which are too rigidly set in gender stereotypes which creates sexism, homophobia and transphobia.

Additionally I would highlight common areas of discrimination shared between the cisgendered and trans - e.g. discrimination against women and transwomen based on the same basic principles.

Thank you all for the replies & ideas, I'm going to spend a few hours working on some rough ideas tomorrow ready for my meeting on Tuesday. My first priority is to get things ready for the IDAHO event & once that's out of the way I can look at setting up a support group (I've already been offered a discreet venue for it).

@learningtolive, the doggies name is Marvin but he's also known as Poopie, he's a labrador/doberman, he's bouncy, clumsy & a bundle of love on 4 legs, if it wasn't for him then I may not have made it through some of the harder times over the last few months.

Well, you better tell Marvin he is cutie and give him a big hug for me!  Dogs are the best and really can be loving and understanding when the world is not.

I wish you lots of luck on the meeting.
