I watched one of the episodes of What Would You Do with Trans Woman being one of the characters and one of the guests was insulting her in public. Some people stepped in and supported her  and even protected her. My take on this is, that is all great. People want to be seen as open minded in public, but when comes to their own family member, their reaction might be completely different.

That's been my experience, as far as my (now ex- ) in-laws have been...they still act as if they're oh so tolerant, but their behavior towards me is anything but accepting.

Ymmv, of course.
...I think for most of us it is a futile effort to try and put this genie back in the bottle once she has tasted freedom...

yeah with family its hitting home for them so they react with emotion first. i know many people in my family more or less knew before i did. my mom was really not surprised and same with my siblings. although they did give me a had time about it for a while when i was little. it hurt my dad at first but in the end it made our relationship so much closer. there are those in my family who dont like it but whatever. the important ones are cool with me and still see me as a girl (weird girl but girl non the less) and mostly have always seen me that way. oh and as for the people in public thing. from what i have been told by guys is they are fast to protect me no matter what is said about me spending the first 13 ish years of my life as a boy because they see a woman in front of them and instinct says to protect me. i love that about them.but it also makes me sad because from what they are saying if i did not pass they might not help me  >:(
