Trans OnCamera: 60 years of Transgender Representations on TV and in Film
In this workshop Laverne takes a look back at non-fiction trans representations in mainstream media over the past 60 years. Through analysis and discussion of video clips starting with the iconic press conference which accompanied Christine Jorgensen's return to the United States from Denmark in 1953, Laverne will encourage participants to look at how these representations affect public discourse and policy making around trans issues. Participants will be encouraged to look at the intersections of race, class and gender and how they determine the ways in which trans stories are told, as well as whose stories are told. The workshop will also look at how myths about trans people are perpetuated in the media, how trans identities are sensationalized and objectified as well as ways to combat that. Drawing from her extensive media knowledge as an actress, producer and blogger, Laverne will also offer strategies for trans people to tell their own stories
more affectively.  This workshop looks back at the history of trans people on camera so we can move forward.
