The conservative  Illinois Review blog posted a review of Shrek the Third, giving it a thumbs down because they felt that the mannish character of Doris the Ugly Stepsister, voiced by CNN's Larry King, is the byproduct of the  Hollywood propaganda machine aimed at luring America's youth towards the evils of ->-bleeped-<-.

Hey look, I was transsexual!  Did I miss something?  What is our agenda?  Will someone please let me know?  Oh... it's pursuing equal rights?  You've got to be kiddding.  We don't deserve equal rights.

But then, according to this article, it's a sexual thing:

Quote
Those confused about their sexual roles are pushing for equal rights to be free to publicly demonstrate their odd sexual behavior. For transgenders, appearing to be a different sex in public is their particular turn on. We need to understand that acceptance of this sexual behavior is just another step moving our world toward sexual chaos.

I wish I could scream it to them.  "I am asexual you moron! It's not about sex!"

I feel raped by their ignorance. How is that for sexual expression?  How do I let them get me so angry?

Uneducated, ignorant, dirt clods.  I hate to call anyone names, but "they" don't classify as human beings in my book.  Why do they get equal rights and we do not?  Where do I go to scratch that idiot's eyes out?

My agenda is to go across the street and buy an ice cream sandwich.

Evil? Perhaps. But delicious.

I KNEW IT!! I am on to you.  :D

   Once again, I'm with Cindi.

I don't like to call anyone names, but this is just becoming annoying. Why can't these animals just shut up and allow Zombies to eat her Ice cream sandwich in peace?

I would also like to refer to them as "Bumheads".  I hope I didn't break a rule with that one.

I think shrek is pro-monster, they'll lure our lovely children into wanting to be horrible beasts!! How could they.

I think I'll petition congress, the pope and the UN about this.

Since you put it that way. You can count me in. It's about time the world trembled at my very presence.  >:D

If it furthers any agenda, Shrek furthers the "wring all the money you can out of a movie franchise" agenda.  (Actually, I think "Shrek the Third" is a funny movie.)

Alright, listen up!

I am sick and tired of not getting the latest LBGT agenda!  I filed my name and address change weeks ago and I haven't even received an acknowledgment from headquarters!

I really am tired of having to borrow agendas' from people when these fun-duh-mentalist seem to get them before the ink is even dry!  I am really starting to get mad!

I don't know who to subvert anymore!  At first I thought is was just my family, ok I did that when I came out.  But now what?  And I haven't even seen the new Shrek yet so how can I extol the virtues of transsexuality if I don't see the latest clips?

Really ladies this is getting out of hand!  Who's in charge here?  A bunch of bimbo blonds?

-Sandy (oops, I am blond...)

LOL, to be fair though, it should be mentioned that there ARE people who do just that: dress up and go out in public for the thrill, whether erotic or emotional. It's obviously not what motivates TSism, but the average person often doesn't make the fine distinctions we take for granted, being so immersed in all this stuff ourselves.

Yeah, but those people dressing for kicks are okay too. They're doing their thing. We're doing our thing. And it all just gets better.

     Sandy,
Nobody would know what our agenda is if the great unwashed didn't create it themselves and then tell everybody. You have to subscribe to right-wing christian periodicals like the rest of us do.  Do we have to explain everything to you, Blondie?   :)

A friend and I just saw the flick today, and I'm glad there was an explanation as to who the really butch woman character was, because I could not figure it out? Take her out of the dress, and drop her in a pair of slacks, and she easily passed as a guy. It was also obvious that a male actor was voicing over her part.

That whole movie had a really weird vibe. Not at all like the first couple of Shrek's IMHO.
But the crowd was full of kids and parents, and no one made any kind of comment about that butch character. More ado about nothing from the right.

This is just ridiculous. Whether the critics agreed with the characterization or not, they have to realize that reality is diverse, and people appreciate a hint of realism in character design when watching a film.

A wise man once said, "i lol'ed"

And wtf... when did we get agendas? Did I miss the memo? Are they leather-bound and embroidered with our initials or something? Can I order mine in pink?

Lame.

She was in Shrek II also.  After the film my two daughters (age 9 and 12 at the time) had a debate over who she was.  "That was a man in a dress!"  "No, that was the Ugly Stepsister!"

Not mine.  I want the President's residence repainted.  It would be so much nicer to refer to the "Mauve House spokesman."

Well,

I now realize that I didn't see that one either, so now I guess I need to rent it.

Kids are always going to question people when they see something they haven't encountered before. Little girls questioning butch women about their identity the first couple of times they meet someone is normal and that situation has been going on for generations. It is also critical for young women that will grow up to be butch themselves. The first time you meet someone as a child, that you can identify with personally is always a type of epiphany, especially so in the queer community.

Meeting one person that is out and about and doing their thing on their own terms in the real world can go a long way to undermining the negative idears sown in the minds of young impressionables by family and authority figures, if your identity is out of bounds with the normative.

What I want to know is who taught those kids that phraseology, "man in a dress." I am not sure children would adopt that terminology on their own if it were not first planted in their mind. Kids might question something out of the norm, but typifying someone as being outside the norn of what they appear to be is a learned behaviour, methinks.
