The hate crime bills, Gohmert said, would not have affected the outcomes of the cases of Matthew Shepherd, a homosexual who was beaten to death, or James Byrd, a black man who was dragged to death in Jasper.

He also said that, in the case of Virginia Tech, none of the students would have been protected under the legislation unless they had been "a transgendered transvestite with gender identity issues."
