UVa extends benefit to gay couples

The University of Virginia will allow same-sex partners of its students and employees to join the university's gyms, officials announced Tuesday. Gay and lesbian staff members had pushed the university for years to add the benefit.

In a written opinion issued June 7, Virginia Attorney General Bob McDonnell told the school it could provide gym memberships to adults who live with an employee or student but are not their spouse.
