New Study Suggests Link Between Experiences of Discrimination and Suicide Attempts Among Transgender People
Source: The Williams Institute Author: Laura Rodriguez and Donald Gaitlin

New analysis of responses to the National Transgender Discrimination Survey (NTDS) shows that transgender respondents who experienced rejection by family and friends, discrimination, victimization, or violence have a higher risk of attempting suicide. 78 percent of survey respondents who suffered physical or sexual violence at school reported suicide attempts, as did 65 percent of respondents who experienced violence at work. The analysis is part of a new study conducted by Ann P. Haas and Philip L. Rodgers of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and Jody L. Herman of UCLA Law School's Williams Institute.

The most interesting point I saw was about the method of assessing suicide attempts (page 3 of the full report).

The National Transgender Discrimination Survey (NTDS) in the US in 2010 used a yes/no question when asking about attempted suicide.

This resulted in a reported rate of attempted suicide among trans folk of 41% (2577 out of 6258).

The report notes that the National Comorbidity Survey reported a reduction of the reported attempted suicide rate among a random sample of adults from 4.6% in response to a "Yes/No" question to 2.7% in response to in-person interviews.

If a similar reduction was to be found in the trans community, then the 41% would drop to 24% (2577/6258 X 2.7/4.6).

While a 24% attempted suicide rate does not sound as shocking as a 41% rate, it is still a very frightening number.

Even this lower percentage suggests that about 1 out of every 4 trans folk attempts suicide at some point.

Posted this in another message, but thought it would be good to repost here. Figure 8.1 in the below link shows that 35% of adult respondents attempted suicide or self harm as a result of being a crossdresser, transgender/transsexual person or because of other people's reactions to them.  Whether it is 24%, 35%, or 41%, the number is disturbing. These stats include only the those that survived. Let's hope that we can change this statistic for the better.
