Just to let you know, I have fairly good credit. I have never failed to pay anything, and I haven't been sent to collections for any bills. Despite that fact, I was unable to get a loan when I was getting top surgery last year. That is despite the fact that I was making between 300 and 600 dollars a week at the job I was currently employed at.
Do not rely on your ability to secure a loan. These are difficult financial times and many banks are being very quick to deny just about everyone. Especially since you are unemployed, because even if you're getting or even have a degree, the people sitting there in financial offices are already denying plenty of well-educated people their loans.
I moved into the cheapest possible rental that I could live in. I began buying food at the dollar store (Dollar Tree actually has good stuff and a big fridge/freezer section!), I started a fundraiser online where people could donate, I did webcam shows and sold clips on two adult sites, and many more small things which added up to me managing to afford top surgery in October, just about 5 or 6 months after starting T.
Get a savings account at a SEPARATE bank other than your usual one. Make small deposits in this (even as low as 5 or 10 dollars whenever you can) and do not take it out for ANY reason. Decide that you're going to pretend that money does not exist. If you'd spent it on a spare meal or something it wouldn't, so go ahead and hoard it there for your top surgery.
I got top surgery in October and then I was unemployed for January-April. Despite this fact, I have managed to save up over 2,000$ (I believe 3,000) toward metoidioplasty.
