"After being bitten by the politics bug in 1988, a gay Dartmouth college student would abandon plans to pursue a career in architecture and instead move to D.C. where, years later, he would ascend the ranks to take on the second-highest civilian position in the U.S. Air Force."

This story/interview is about the only openly-gay undersecretary of the Air Force.

I was lead to the interview above by this article on BuzzFeed:

Eric Fanning, Out Gay Man, Takes Over As Acting Secretary Of The Air Force

"Confirmed by the Senate in April as the undersecretary of the Air Force, Eric Fanning became the civilian head of the Air Force on Friday when his boss, Air Force Secretary Michael Donley, retired. Fanning, who is gay, is the highest-ranking [] LGBT person in the Defense Department. President Obama is yet to nominate Donley's replacement, so Fanning should be serving in the dual roles for a while."

Fanning is interested in adding more anti-discrimination policies in the military.

As a former USAF enlistee, I find it amusing--and ironic--in that the AF has always been kinda derided by the other services as being "gay", even more so than the Navy. The jokes and such that I heard might have been just playful inter-service rivalry, but there were times I wasn't too sure about the jocular nature of the things being said...

And now in fact, we have the first openly gay Secretary of the AF....Well, congratulations USAF!

...I think for most of us it is a futile effort to try and put this genie back in the bottle once she has tasted freedom...

As a civilian who serves as a public health/ER nurse on them navy carriers every so often I would think the navy is way more gay, bisexual, trans and horn dog/ catching stuff from all ports than the Air Force. However the marines is still the most lesbian oriented ;)
