Mentioned in my intro thread that while I've been into TG fiction/captions/media for a while now,  I've only recently put any serious amount of thought into dressing.

Some of the threads on here were good reference, as was this: http://www.crossdressers.com/forums/showthread.php?38742-Tips-for-Beginners-Closets-and-Older-Crossdressers

Finally worked up the courage to buy a dress at a thrift store the other day, which was a bit exciting.  The one I actually wanted and thought would fit better didn't, but I ended up with this one, which is quite nice, too:  http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/380661822976?lpid=82.  The cashier made small talk about how pretty it was, I said I hope so, left it somewhat ambiguous.  Tried to go to a quieter cashier, but got the old "I can help you over here."

Unfortunately, I fell victim to the uncertain nature of thrift store labeling and sizing.  Had to take it back (suppose I could have just donated it back).  The cashier the that checked me out was there, came up as I was returning it and said "dress didn't fit?"  I said "No, she didn't like it.  Didn't like the color."  Wasn't really facing her so couldn't judge her reaction, wonder if she was surprised that it wasn't for me after all, or still knew that it was.  Not sure I'm ready to admit it's for me, though that might make it easier.  I like that I was able to do it, don't think I liked the chatting part.  On the whole, not sure if the buying/returning cycle was empowering or slowed me down a bit.

Can't decide where I want to go next with this.  On the one hand, I'd be up for buying/trying another dress.  But it's a crapshoot as to whether there will be anything worth buying.  In the meantime, I could envision stocking up some makeup and accessories here and there, but I'm not quite sure how much effort I want to put in to learning that sort of thing just yet.  Still at the point where I want to be really cheap and discrete about it, for a number of reasons.  I'm not entirely opposed to letting my wife know, but now's not the right time to tell her, nor is it the right time to be spending much on it (and she runs the money).

No real intent with this post, just getting it out there for now.   We'll see how it goes.

I always go to the dressing rooms and try them on. If you feel really uncomfortable you could use the old trick about wearing them for a Halloween party. :)
