This is a film about a couple and their relationship as Laurence decides transition into life as a woman.

"Laurence Anyways flows naturally, both thematically and stylistically, from Dolan's previous movies; here, though, he succeeds more than ever at incorporating his visual idiosyncrasies into the narrative. In I Killed My Mother and even more so in Heartbeats, the director's long slow-motion sequences and overbearing, eclectic soundtracks could feel like crutches, overused particularly during characters' moments of vulnerability. "

"This film is as much a portrait of a loving if dysfunctional couple as it is an examination of identity. Without belittling the challenges and prejudices Laurence faces, Dolan places her story into larger contexts, posing questions about conformity, heartbreak, love and self-fulfillment.

Most of all, perhaps, Laurence Anyways examines what one character calls "the logic of the heart." Such a logic, Dolan pushes us to acknowledge, is nowhere near as impervious to outside influence as we might hope. It's untidy, unstable and most of all fragile — capable of being turned upside down by the simple power of a look."

Blah, wish I could say more about this, with info about Dolan. I've seen the full movie--it is very well written, very well portrayed, avoids negative stereotypes, etc. I'm also billingual, French as my second language (for 13 years now!), so I can understand it better than most would. The downside is that it's a bit long at 2.5 hours, and is perhaps draggy for that reason, but then again, as it's said, transition is not a sprint, but a marathon. Something of a spoiler is that there is no operation, but in this sense, it has the French movie ending (plus another surprise), which I tend to rather enjoy. I also have a link to the full film, but decided against posting it, since I'm not sure it's against site rules or not (is it?).

I also have a tiny bit of connection to the film, sort of. I'm a university undergrad, and one of my two majors is French. So, I told the department head I'm TS, and she's super awesome about it. How so? Aside from immediately knowing something like that was up, she started using Jessica/she/her immediately. More importantly: she also suggested this movie for the annual French Movie Night we do-which means getting the director there, if possible (usually is), and a bunch of people see the movie (we had Tom-Boy, an FTM-based French film 2 years back; it's diverse). All because of me! And then, if that does happen...I'm debating giving them a first-person take on what it's like to be the main character in that film and how I live it.

Wow Jessica - you go girl!

If you would like, post the film link in the Movies forum.

I think that is where Susan posted the link for TomBoy - a 2011 (?) film.
