Damnation and salvation.

Mutually exclusive, dichotomous, or what?

Damnation is putting up with the extremist bigots.  Salvation is a party at my house.

They have nothing to do with each other.

John the revelator took drugs.... I'm convinced ;)

There's too much color in his narative to take literally IMO.

They have nothing to do with each other.

Well, are they not both manifestations of having been touched by God?

In A Course in Miracles, Jesus (the narrator) says that there is no sin and therefore no hell, no damnation.

The only problem is that most of us don't believe it yet.

Whenever - in all of time - we all realize it, time will stop and the dream will be over.  We will all be home.

Wow. That makes this [arguably completely silly] topic totally worthwhile, to me anyway. Thanks for redeeming it.

Revelation 20:10 "And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever." >:D

Geez, what, or whose, God does this stuff? Assuming it's God doing the casting. I kinda sorta understand God, in His Function as Central Casting, casts the devil in this dramatic role, it's a goody, but what beast and whose false prophet?

Salvation is having one's sins atoned for and receiving the gift of eternal life.
Though throughout this life we work out our salvation.  The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life.

Why is eternal life a gift and not 'a given'? Is this eternal life idea about a return to source ('home' in Robyn's post)? If so, what warrants this eternal punishment option? (Is it at all related to bad apples from forbidden trees?)

As I asked above, are both options 'touched by God', or not? "Eternal damnation" is the kind of idea that, to me, would appear to originate from a suspect source. It might be a very entertaining story, but I'm not sure it's the most helpful story.

by contrast here is another old story:

(MENG-PO: Underworld Goddess of Forgetfulness and Amnesia)

MENG-PO, often known simply as Lady Meng ('Dream'), is the Buddhist Goddess who dishes out the Bittersweet Broth of Oblivion. This is a mystic brew made from herbs and pond water which she prepares for the souls of the dead.

She is waiting for you at the Ninth Chinese Hell in FENG-DU, where your soul will be ready to leave the recycling centre and head for the reincarnation door. One sip of her Five-Flavored Tea of Forgetfulness and you will lose all memory of who you were. This ensures that when you are reborn you can start with a clean slate.

The only thing that passes from one incarnation to the next is Karma, which is why no-one remembers their past lives. This amnesia is supposed to be an act of mercy. It may not seem fair to lose the wisdom and knowledge you accumulate during your life — but on the other hand it does prevent cheating.

There is no known antidote to Lady Meng's potion. Only BUDDHA 'himself' managed to shake off the effects — after meditation revealed to him his previous lives.

Having read the gory details of what happens to you in FENG-DU every time you die, we're very happy to forget the whole thing.

Personally I feel hell is false, or at least not as we think it is.

It dosn't mesh that God trys only in our very short lives to love us, then ends up hating us for all eternity if we don't beleive. It just dosn't match up with my own experiences and what he has shown me.

I beleive in redemption, no matter what the sin. No matter how horrific the crime. Then again I have been wrong before...

Once the beast is in the fire, it is a roast beast.

the False Prophet is if the beast is undercooked and the diners get food poisoning.

I almost forgot to say that both salvation and damnation are within each of us. We hand it out to ourselves.

QuoteOne sip of her Five-Flavored Tea of Forgetfulness and you will lose all memory of who you were.

Apparently, I didn't drink enough.
Or I have screwed up so many lives and I'm here for my 50 trillionth trying to get it right, that I've built up an immunity to the stuff.

My theory is that my GID is caused by deeply rooted subconcious memories of my past few lives which causes me to feel, at a very basic instinctual level, female.  This belief has also caused me to fight my GID because I believe that is simply 'left over' from a time that doesn't matter anymore.  I'll win. or die.

I believe that if you don't fight it, you will position yourself well for the next life. By fighting it, you may be holding yourself back from truly going forward.  Maybe.

I'm hungry now, boy...

good thing The Brick Pig's House Bar-B-Q gots it all.

no jive though: If 'the devil that deceived them' was cast into the lake... 'where the beast and the false prophet are'...

It makes NO sense! Who's in charge of this Hell? The Devil? Why was 'the false prophet' already in there? If he prophesied the Devil, was it false? Which comes first, the chicken or the deviled egg?

I mean, seriously...
