A couple of ibuprofens taken a couple of hours before dilating seem to make it easier. For one thing, it reduces the inflamation caused by dilating.

I have noticed (have back trouble most of life) when i take the Ibuprofen and musle relaxer it also helps. I also use ice to help with some of the after swelling when i can.

Ibuprofen isn't known as a NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) for nothing. Obviously can't be used in the first couple weeks post op because of bleeding risk although I was on a steroid anti-inflammatory; probably couldn't tell the difference (since I'm at risk of bleeding).

Muscle relaxants helped me more with initial dilation discomfort than pain meds did although I combined meds for synergistic effect.

I was told in my discharge instructions to use Advil gel caps.  I only had to for the first four weeks.  I couldn't use "I have a headache" with any of my three plastic boy friends!!

Wiser now about Post Op reality!!
