Now, amid a revived debate about whether gays should serve openly, Estes has built stories such as those into the first museum exhibit of its kind in the United States — one that documents the history of gays and lesbians in the military. "Out Ranks: GLBT Military Service from World War II to the Iraq War" opened Friday at the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual Transgender Historical Society in San Francisco.
