It seems literally impossible to find a therapist. Can someone help me find one?

Hey everyone. I'm a 24 year old guy who knows he should have been born a woman. I have been wrestling with this issue for years, now, but recently some things changed in my life and I know it is time. It is time for me to begin my transition and become the person I was meant to be.

There is a problem though. I live in upstate NY, and there appear to be no therapists that can help me in my town(Binghamton), and it also seems impossible to find a legitimate therapist online. I am getting very sad and frustrated over this.

Does anyone know of any good LBGT therapists in Binghamton that can help get me on my way to HRT? If not, does anyone know of any good LBGT therapists online that can help me get on my way? This first step is so hard to complete and I am quite literally desperate to get on my way with my transformation. I am sure many of you know how I feel. It is time and I do not need to wait any longer.

Any help would be appreciated in great amounts :)

Here is a list of Gender therapists listed by state.  http://www.lauras-playground.com/gender_therapists.htm

I can't say whether there is anything for your home town, but maybe you could find someone close.  Also, don't despair, there are therapists who exist outside of that list that may be able to help.

Here is a list of general therapists in your area. http://therapists.psychologytoday.com/rms/state/NY/Binghamton.html
Some of these therapists are just as qualified to help, but you need to see if they have a history with helping trans patients and what their level of general knowledge is.

Also, doesn't SUNY Binghatom have some counselling services?  Even if you aren't a student, you could see if there is someone you could speak with.  Also, they must have an lgbt chapter that you can talk to and learn about what's out there.

Sorry I can't be much help.  I live in metro NY, but I wish my fellow New Yorker lots of luck. :)

I live in Binghamton!!!!  And I have recommendations for you!

There is no one who specializes in TG in town ( I looked for a long time) , but there is one of the best and most experienced gender therapists nearby in Ithaca.  It's about an hour away.

Her name is Joanne Zager.  I'm sure if you google her, you will easily find her information.

Also if you ever need speech therapy, Joey Zanfordino is also in Ithaca.  He provides free speech therapy clinic for transgendered persons at Ithaca college.

Feel free to message me if you ever need any more advice (:

Oh, and Joanne Zager also can do phone therapy sessions too, if traveling is too difficult for you.  I'm very fortunate that my insurance fully covers her sessions.  She really is amazing, though. Not only is she an amazing and supportive and knowledgeable gender therapist (it's what she specializes in and she has been doing it for over 20 years), but she's a great friend too! (:

I'm not a New Yorker, but I am a South Carolinion that couldn't find access to a nearby gender therapist nearby so I saw an online therapist.  I saw Dr. Carol Clark in Florida through Skyping and she is a great therapist.  I personally chose to pay out of pocket but I believe she takes insurance.

UGG. I had a good friend there that was MTF. I visited with her a few time (lived in north east pa.) I know she was seeing a gender therapist.
Just over the years i kinda lost track of her. She would not transition due to her wife and was putting a huge strain on her.

Look in the yellow pages under therapist, gender or sex. Then just make phone calls. Also check and see if there is a local LGBT group.

I found this maybe will help http://therapists.psychologytoday.com/rms/prof_results.php?city=Binghamton&county=Broome&state=NY&spec=270
and this one a face book item https://www.facebook.com/TransProudBinghamtonNyChapter

Hello everyone,

Thanks for your advice! It won't let me reply to PMs, but I am calling Dr Zager in the morning. Phone sessions might be the way to go.

Suppose I decide I want to transition (I am 99% sure that I do), is she someone that can help me with that too?

Go with Dr. Graham. If you are sure you want hormones he will 100% write you a letter after a upfront fee and a few sessions. http://gendertherapist.com/
