Erasing my identity: How the media screws transgender people
Parker Molloy, Oct 2, 2013

One job. The job of a journalist is simple: report factual information. This is quite literally their only job. In fact, the Associated Press created guidelines for reporting, developed in an effort to keep the reporting from one outlet to another uniform in style and substance.

Why, oh, why is it so hard for some journalists to complete the one, single task required in their job?

26-year-old Erycka Morgan, a transgender woman, was stabbed to death last week in her home, proving that even in death our identities remain unsettled, Susan Epstein of the New Jersey Star-Ledger opted to ignore industry guidelines and instead report Ms. Morgan's death with only masculine pronouns and her given name.

One's personal feelings on a topic should not interfere with their professional output. All too often, reporters allow anti-transgender views dictate whether or not they'll follow the AP Stylebook.
