Now that I am getting longer hair (still short, but not buzzed anymore) I am getting bedhead.  As my hair gets longer, it starts to get wavy and sometimes wants to be very unruly!

What do you girls do if you don't want to wash your hair everyday?  Any secrets?

When I don't wash my hair, I braid my hair before bed so when I get up it's got slight waves.  I also brush out my hair before bed and then once I get up if I don't braid it.

I place mine in a bun on the back of my head.  Also there are head wraps that you can wear at night to prevent bedhead.

Mine is not near long enough to braid.  I find brushing helps, but I still often have to wet down the sides and brush it, but doesn't look as good as after a wash/blow dry.

I was wondering if a hair cap would help or not.

It might, it's always worth a try.  I've never used one in bed because they always covered my ears and I don't like my ears being covered when I sleep.

  Hi there ,

I have a question regarding wearing hair cap or anything that cover the hair during sleeping . I thought that would help me , because my hair tends to get tangled when i move in the sleep , but then I read that it is not healthy for the hair and hair roots to be covered for many hours .
Do you know if it is affecting the hair to cover it for the whole night  ?

Run your fingers thru it in the morning to get it evenly disheveled and call it good?

In that case, I tie my hair to make a ponytail in the morning. In the afternoon, I untie and comb my hair, sometimes with the hair iron.

I'd like to know something that works as well.   When my hair was halfway down my back and thicker it wasn't a problem because I could tie it up strategically, but now I have the new growth that needs to catch up to the rest and I get the dreaded "pillow perm" every morning, it's pretty heinous.

*edit- Hey mon, I think I just saw the solution in my own post: "dreaded!"  :D

That dreaded awkward stage. Believe me I know it. I wash and condition mine everyday and then the whole ritual to keep if from fizzing. The longer it gets the more it will settle down especially if it is curly and or wavy. Other than not washing it just use enough water to get it somewhat managable and a little hairspray. Mine is about 1/3 of the way down my back and its still unruly at times but a way better unruly than when it was shorter.

Or just rock the bedhead look.

I think Jess pinned it. You're growing your hair out and have hit the dreaded "awkward stage". This happens because shorter hair tends to train itself to grow more up at odd angles, but it isn't so evident because it's short. When it grows a few inches longer, it sticks out all over the place. The good news is this a temporary thing. As hair grows longer the weight of the ends pull the roots down more and hair begins to grow more flat against the head. It can take the better part of a year or so to get to that point though. You can help it along by smoothing it down with grooming products or gadgets such as barrettes, headbands, hats and ponytail holders.

Well, for what it's worth, as my hair is quite a bit longer than yours (to my waist), some nights I braid my hair, and some nights I put it up in a bun on the back of my head.  In either case, I cover my hair, braided or bunned, with a satin sleep cap that I get from Sally's Beauty Supply.  I've been covering my hair every night with a satin sleep cap, oh, for a good 15 to 18 years or more.  If covering my hair while I sleep is causing any kind of damage, well, I haven't noticed it.  Also, I tuck the satin cap behind my ears.  I have no particular issue with my ears being covered while I sleep (not so I've noticed anyway), it just seems the natural thing to do to tuck the cap behind my ears.

As an alternative to the sleep cap, you can also get from Sally's Beauty Supply a satin pillow case that is designed specifically to minimize friction on your hair while you sleep.  Apparently the slippery satin prevents damage to your hair and lessens the effect of "bed head".  My sister is a fan of the satin pillow case.  I'm a satin sleep cap girl all the way.

I hope this helps.
