Many of you don't know but I recently ended up getting a colostomy. In fact, I haven't gotten home yet since the surgery.

Does anyone know if I can go swimming with the colostomy and how I would go about doing so? If nothing else, it is a good excuse for wearing a shirt as opposed to just not liking my chest. I plan to ask my surgeon when I see her next Monday but I've been wondering for a bit now and hope I don't forget to ask.

The anesthesia and pain meds seem to have done a number on my ability to remember things.

I don't have one, but my husband did due to a bad car accident damaging most of his intestines.

He didn't swim, and often the tape would fall off if he was in the bathtub for too long. (part of why it feel off more easily on him was because his skin was really sensitive to the glue on the tape, he'd get red bumps which probably contributed to it coming loose)

There's special coverings that you can buy at medical supply shops to protect the tape/glue from coming off while it's wet. Also, you can swim with a suit on that's somewhat water resistant, like surfer's wear. You should also wear tighter swim trunks with a higher waist to keep the bottom of the bag from moving all around.

I wish you well on your recovery Lordkat.

This thread didn't show back up til now. Grr.

Thanks for the replies. My skin itches from the adhesive but I don't know what I can do about that. I'm thinking of one of those one piece rash guard type things as top surgery is not in the near future. I'm glad I can still go swimming with the kids at least. It is a yearly birthday thing that 3 of my kids do since all their birthdays are in the same week,

We do what it takes to maintain a sense of normality for the kids sake don't we? You are a swell mommy!
