This one literally hits close to home, about 6 miles away to be exact. The fact that Monica Roberts picked up on this one also adds some details in my mind that the story does not give. I already had some clue by virtue of the location that it occurred at. This is in an area of mingled Latino and African American residences and small industrial neighborhoods.
I had to deal professionally with the El Monte Pollice Department for many years because of my state job, and while most of their officers are good people who will treat Trans* and all people with honor and respect, certain parts of the community support the rogue officers in what should be intolerable behavior. By being where the woman was at that time she was, she was presumed guilty until proven even guiltier of sex work in all eyes that might have seen this. That is background and not my personal feelings.
I will conduct daylight business in that area with nothing more than ordinary watchfulness, but from late evening on, I would be at risk there for a number of reasons that would violate the terms and conditions here if I talked about them. This is too close to home in all senses to me.
