Behind stall doors
14 November 2012 By Thomas Martinson, Staff Writer

A transgender man enters the men's restroom.

A transgender woman enters the women's restroom.

What happens next?

This question and other real-life stories were exposed in Sheila Cavanagh's play, "Queer Bathroom Monologues," performed at Towson's Mainstage Theatre Monday, Nov. 12.

"Monologues'" script was created through Cavanagh's 2010 academic journal, "Queering Bathrooms: Gender, Sexuality, and the Hygienic Imagination," a text that illustrates the past and present history of restrooms and other stigmas associated with the Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgender community.

All public restrooms should be multi-user unisex with adequate privacy for the stalls. This would solve all of the potty parity issues, save space and costs.

Public restrooms can be very dangerous places. I have had to use public restrooms a lot of my lifetime (18 years) due to work and let me tell you, rest areas in the middle of the night, no freakin' way. I have been in restrooms in truck stops that had glory holes in the stalls, or smaller holes that someone can look through. I have had "things" come through the bigger holes and have seen eyes in the smaller ones looking at me. One night about two am I had someone push a porn magazine into my stall, I could hear the person masturbating and breathing. That kind of freaked me out a little. I shudder thinking of using public restrooms in the middle of the night. So really how much more deviant is it for a trans person to use the restroom they are presenting as than the other's out there. I'm not knocking anyone but there are sexual deviants out there just looking to prey on someone or get a cheap thrill and you can bet that these folks don't identify as part of the LGBT community. So what goes on behind stall doors, I really don't want to know even though I do in some instances and have been really freaked out by some of it. Now I carry a Gatorade bottle and will stop, do my business and empty it in some dirt.

Sexually separated restrooms can be more dangerous for women as fewer people will be in there making it easier for the pervert.  Multi-user unisex restrooms will be more likely to have other people presant making it more dangerous for the pervert.
