Many are calling attention to the case of Islan Nettles [. . . ] the 21-year-old woman from Harlem who was attacked in the streets for being transgender.

On the eve of Transgender Day of Remembrance, misdemeanor charges against the man accused of her murder were dropped. Family and friends of Nettles have expressed outrage but said they are hopeful felony homicide and hate crime charges will be filed.
