Nicknames

So to some of us a nickname replaces our real names, while some of us dread them. When i was still living as Chris i didn't mind my nickname of Bubba....i mean im a southern fried, baptized in gravy redneck and proud of it ya know....but now that nickname is more of a horrid reminder of the life i used to live....aka Chris.

Im wondering if anyone else has the same problem and am wondering what your new nickname became as you transitioned.

Most of the nicknames that I was given were offensive names that bullies came up for me.  I never really had a friendly nickname other than the unisex version of my birth name which people still use to this day.  However, once I change my name, I will like that name to go with it.  I assume people will realize that Bubba is offensive to call a transwoman.  It should be self explanatory to the people who know about you.  Have you found it to be an issue with those who know?

Noep, only people who still call me Bubba are the few people im not out to yet. One person called me Bubbles tho recently and i almost smacked them lol.

After I moved I gained a new nickname which eventually lead to my current name. Now I have two nicknames, one is 'Sugar' and the other is my user name. I end up using Ashey more myself though lol.

Well, his nickname was Cain, because he felt uncomfortable with his male name. Actually, "Cain" was everything about the male alter ego, which was not even him, if You get the idea... This might sound crazy, but he could not figure out things about male world, but "Cain" would succesfully pretend that he did. Like, there was me, then there was him, but he was totally confused and so he (or maybe me?) made that alter ego who eventually took things over. Sounds like scizho, but I wish it was that simple .

Not so much a nickname but I get called by my gamertag (part of it) by people I met thru Xbox and the competitive scene. I get called Martyr by them. Which is fine, to be honest more people I am friends with called me that over my boy name. Debating changing my GT soon though.

Well that's good.  I don't think you will have a problem with most people.  There may be the few jerks who will call you "Bubba" but most will probably understand and be respectful.

My old nickname used to be the gender opposite of Jennygirl.. (replace "e" with "o" and "girl" with "boy"). When I first dressed as Jennygirl I called it my "alter ego" and the "costume" stuck among my friends.. MUCH to my joy little did they know. At that point things really started to make sense.

3 years later, I told my friends that the costume was actually no costume at all and that I wanted to be Jennygirl every day. They were already used to calling me Jennygirl on occasion anyway 🙂

My mum has always called me "floss" or "flossy" no idea why. She's called me that for as long as I can remember and still does.

I have a horrible nickname given by a gay guy back at boarding school which stuck.

Relates to lower area and its size. Yuck.

Plenty of them over the years,Irish Jimmy despite being more Scottish than Irish though I had an Irish surname,Big Jim and Tiny.

FYI, bubba means grandmother to me.

I'm strongly debating taking Robin as my female name.  I like that if people mess up and call me Rob, I can just take it a short for Robin instead of Robert.  And I will imagine that any relatives I deal with who already call me by the wrong name ("Bobby")  I'll read that as Bobbi.

I just can't stand the Idea of "Roberta" though...

From early public school all the way through to transition/SRS at age 24 I was most often referred to as "it" because I so obviously did not fit my legal gender. My friends used a gender-neutral nickname derived from my male name but being called "it" always hurt.

My full birth name, "Billy Makali'i Brown."
There was a short period during grade school where everyone called me "Bilbo," and there's still one person who calls me that from time to time. I haven't really come out to him yet. In the last two years my close friends took to calling me "Billay." I don't know why. Maybe they thought they were being classy.

Nowadays at my new school and at home I resent anyone calling me by my male name. I have instead adopted my middle name, "Makali'i." Everyone calls me "Maka" though. 🙂 Sometimes at school some people have fun with it. x) I've been called Makana, Manaka (sounds like Monica), Makarena (like the song. xD ) Makalisha, and I have one teacher who just makes bird noises whenever he sees me (mcaw!).

When I meet new people, I tell them my name is Maka. 🙂
