So I'm going to legally change my name from Eric to Erin. In my state (OK) you have to put a reason/justification. I'm unsure what to put since I'm not planning to (legally) change my sex anytime soon. I know a local transwoman and she put something like she was changing her name to be more congruent with her lifestyle choice and appearance etc... In other words "I'm getting a sex change!"

I'd rather put something less assuming like "It fits me better" since I'm content with my birth genitalia, but I'm not sure how verbose you have to be on these things.

Any ideas on what to put?

I wrote that I wanted the name I use be my legal name.

You can write almost anything including because you like that name and not your birthname. Just don't write that you are hiding or escaping from anything.

I know someone that has changed their name 3 times. Just to a name that fits them better.

Interesting. That's something that I'm going to have to check out for myself to see if I need to do in my state.

Yeah, it seems that you need to give a reason just so they know you're not trying to get out of debt.

I personally think you should just go toward the sex change approach of it and write it down so the judge will approve it. It doesn't matter if that's not your intent, it's just maybe simpler to understand why you're doing it and to have the rationale for it. It's not like the judge is going to go back in a year and make sure you've gone from Male to Female.

Good luck with it :)

BTW --- when I had mine changed (New Hampshire), all I had to do was go into the judge's quarters --- he asked me why I wanted to do it ... then quickly signed it and it was done in under a minute. It's very simple :)

If they don't allow it, for whatever reason, I think you should come back with a second argument to change your name legally to Pickles, because that's what everyone you know calls you...(and then later change it to Erin because everyone calls you Pickles, and you don't like that)
