For lack of a better term, I will use Shaman, even though I refer to many cultures around the world.

I hate digging up links so dig them up yourselves if you doubt me.

Many cultures valued people who did not fit the binary and placed them in positions of importance. They looked to them for advice. They were trusted, not only for their wisdom and intelligence, but because they clearly saw life from its many angles... smart to dumb... religious to secular...young to old... gay/lesbian to straight... male to female...
