Take a look at this.

Use of the reputation system kicks in after 50 posts.

Smite more often say more about the smiter than the smitee.

It's points given by other members. If someone gives you a +1, they like your post enough to do it. If someone gives you a -1, most of the time it's usually because it's something that's flatout offensive. If you click on the link "+0/-1" in the post it was given then you can read the message they gave that says why the reputation was given.

If it was a reputation point on you and you don't think there's anything wrong at all and you care enough, you can ask a mod if they want to remove it, and they will if they agree with you.

Yep. Unlike youtube and other social media, it's really not just a 'like or don't like' button. Smites or downvotes are closely reviewed and will be removed with possible penalty if found unwarranted. Basically, you should only smite a post that a third party would also find objectionable. If you smite a post, you have to be prepared to explain your reasons if it comes up for review. Smiting a post because you disagree with an argument or opinion isn't enough.

If you see a smite that doesn't fit the above criteria, please report it or the post it links to.
