Dressing up

what do you guys out there wear when its time to be a little more...formal?
I usually try to avoid all formal events because I can never find anything that I like and my mother would never let me wear a nice button up and sweater or shirt and tie because im not out yet

I hated them before. Now I just wear suit and tie if appropriate, or dress pants, shirt and tie if a bit less formal.
