A referendum initiative to repeal a new law protecting transgender students in California survived the first round of a statewide verification process, the California Secretary of State's office confirmed to BuzzFeed Wednesday.

California counties will now conduct a full check of every voter signature collected by groups backing the repeal of the law, which has added protections for transgender public school students. If enough signatures were submitted, Californians would vote on the referendum in November.
